I love food. I love to eat. I’m utterly obsessed with it, which is probably why I spend so much time seeking new places to try out in the city. I slowly became picky and demanding towards restaurants. To me, every detail counts: the service, the ambiance, the bread (yes), the décor, even the restrooms and of course, the food. As I have been to many incredible restaurants like Toqué!, Chez l’Épicier, Hôtel Herman and Van Horne, I set the bar high.
So there was a big buzz around the opening of Restaurant Laurea: the chef running Laurea is Hakim Chajar, who has been seen at Les Chefs! I couldn’t wait to eat his cuisine. I have been following this TV show since the beginning and I’m a huge fan. I am always in awe of how the competitors can cook such vibrant, good-looking and mouth-watering food in so very little time.
The restaurant is seriously beautiful: it is filled with gorgeous natural light thanks to the glass roof and, it is impeccably designed. As I was taking some photos while waiting for my friend, the waiter kindly offered to show me around so I could snap with my camera. Well, that’s something I just cannot refuse…
And the food, what about it? I ordered the scallops for appetizers, which were very subtle, fresh and delicate. It was followed by the Harvest: a colourful summery dish full of vegetables, mushrooms, purées and textures; which was probably inspired by Michel Bras’ gargouillou. Oh God, it was as good as it looked. Fortunately, there was still enough light to take pictures. I didn’t have a tripod, so I’m quite happy with how it turned out. For dessert, my friend chose the chocolate pie. Quite good, but the highlight was the bay leaves – laurier – ice cream.
Next time, I will be sitting at the bar while admiring the talented cooks at work. In a nutshell, Laurea is a big yes for the service, the amazing food and the place itself. In my opinion, it might just be one of the most beautiful restaurants in Montréal (and I’ve seen a lot).
