Grilled Cheese Month at L’Gros Luxe

L'Gros Luxe © Sylvie Li 2015
I was invited a few weeks ago to attend the launch of the Grilled Cheese Month at L’Gros Luxe, but couldn’t make it because of school duties (I’m such a good student EH), so instead I went there for lunch with one of my good friends. L’Gros Luxe is well known for its comfort food and is offering this month a different grilled cheese every single day, meaning you can come back any time to try a new one. Sweet, savoury, sophisticated, you name it. Whew! Well I’m down for that. Each time I walk in front of the restaurant in the Mile End, it’s always packed with hipsters people so it seemed the perfect opportunity to go. FYI, I’m going back as soon as I can.

Restaurant Doca

© Sylvie Li 2015 Doca

Last Monday, I was invited to the official opening of Mediterranean Restaurant Doca, located in Griffintown (one block away from West Elm, tee hee). So you know me, I’m down for any invitation that includes food, especially when seafood is involved. The restaurant’s name originally comes from the Portuguese word for « docks » and is relevant to the history of this Montreal neighbourhood.

Trilogie - Sylvie Li -1-2

I’ve wanted to go to Trilogie since the first photos of the restaurant popped up here and there on my Instagram feed. It finally happened two weeks ago, and I went with both my sister and her boyfriend. In case you didn’t notice, we love to catch up over a good meal. So we ordered the umami dumplings (cabbage & pork), the Hunan wontons, the mushroom salad, the cucumber salad and the chicken dumplings. Everything was so. delicious. We were pretty much starving, so I didn’t take as many photos as I would normally, sorry! Continue Reading…

Restaurant Cirkus

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. So it’s a no brainer that one of my favourite weekend activities is to go brunch. Good food, friends and sunlight (for photos, of course)? I’m in. I love trying new places in town and when I heard of Restaurant Cirkus opening last November, it went on top of my bucket list. This restaurant is the new project of Chef Julien Joré and Stéphanie Labelle, the owner of one of my favourite pastry shops in Montréal (Pâtisserie Rhubarbe). I finally got the chance to go there last weekend. Continue Reading…

Le Contemporain

I’ve been with my sister and her boyfriend to a casual 3-courses lunch at restaurant Le Contemporain, located inside the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC). The architecture is full of chic curves, materials and volumes. Our starters were: an aerial celeriac soup with understated smoked mussels and crispy chicken skin; an original carrot covered with cocoa nibs and seasoned with cumin, and a tasty bean salad with an egg and crunchy bacon. For mains, we chose the melting oven-baked salmon (à l’unilatérale) with squash purée, shiitakes, whisky sauce and nasturtium leaves, the savory cod (for once) wrapped with raw homemade ham and cauliflower slices, and finally the duck breast with lentils, dried apricot sauce and pearl onions. For dessert, we had the lemon financier with its glace babeurre and the flavorful blueberry-cranberry-rosemary sauce, as well as the mignardises maison: a cannelé, an Earl Grey macaron and a surprising chocolate saucisson. Some plates were heavy with the salt, but overall, we absolutely loved the beautiful presentations and the delicate use of fresh sprouts and flowers. Shooting for Rutabaga Magazine: Café Parvis

Café Parvis-12

I’m really happy to finally share this post. Last month, I shot Le Défi du chef at Café Parvis for Rutabaga magazine. For the Christmas issue, the chef cooked two vegan recipes and I photographed the whole process. This was one of my first collaborations and I must say I’m pretty fond of the result! Hopefully more opportunities will show up soon. Of course, I couldn’t help myself but shooting a bit around the place. It’s safe to say that I can’t get enough of spaces like these.

To read the full article and recipes, head here and click on 06 (Le Défi du chef : Café Parvis) or scroll down to the bottom. I hope you enjoy! I’ll make sure to try some of these yummy recipes during the holidays too. Continue Reading…

Birthday Lunch – Les 400 coups

Whew. Second food post in a row! #sorrynotsorry

Last week was my birthday and to celebrate, my sister invited me over to have a pre-birthday lunch at Les 400 coups. I’ve been dying to go there since its opening (aka for too long) and I was happy to finally made it after all these years. This place easily makes it to my top 3 restaurants in Montréal (along with Hôtel Herman and Van Horne if you’re curious to know). It was love at first sight when my appetizer arrived: a jaw-dropping plate (just featured below) of smoked duck, blueberries, wintergreen and kohlrabi. We also got to try pork, white beets and smoked potatoes, along with roasted parsnip with red beets, naked oat and hazelnuts as main courses. So yes, you can tell that beets are in season. T’was all delicious, but the most delightful part of this lunch was the desserts (so apparently, I kind of disagree with Marie-Claude Lortie). I loved the lemon cream, melon sherbet and sunflower crumble: a perfect balance of flavours and textures. They know how to make food shine. Continue Reading…

Restaurant Lauréa - © Sylvie Li

I love food. I love to eat. I’m utterly obsessed with it, which is probably why I spend so much time seeking new places to try out in the city. I slowly became picky and demanding towards restaurants. To me, every detail counts: the service, the ambiance, the bread (yes), the décor, even the restrooms and of course, the food. As I have been to many incredible restaurants like Toqué!, Chez l’Épicier, Hôtel Herman and Van Horne, I set the bar high. Continue Reading…

Le Parloir

P7200705-1 SLi

I am a sucker for sweets and thus, this obviously involves afternoon teas. So when I’ve been asked to go to the new tearoom Le Parloir, I said yes right away. It’s always fun for me to discover a place and shoot around, especially when it’s so pretty as one can see. My highlights were the buttery scone (as it is supposed to be) with the Devonshire cream and the delicious and colourful macarons from Les Délices de Marie-Antoinette. Continue Reading…
